A key risk factor for anyone that plays in the food world is safety. Major food corporations, farms, and consumers are all impacted when an issue arises. The recent rise in food safety issues and because so many stakeholders are affected by it, food safety is an amazing space for entrepreneurs to innovate and build game-changing companies.
There are examples abound of these issues that need fixing, from General Mills’ gluten free Cherio’s debacle to Chipotle’s outbreaks to CRF Frozen Food’s (who distributes through Costco and others) recall of thousands of frozen produce products that made it to their consumer’s tables.
These three examples alone help illustrate how every step of the value chain has issues. With CRF, the issue started at the plant. The root cause of the General Mills issue can be directly link to the logistics and transportation of their Oats. The Chipotle issues happened were at point of sale.
We are already seeing some innovation trying to solve these issues from the Foundry Group backed Nima to Minneapolis based Parsyl. As both an investor and consumer I am excited to see where the solutions for these problems will come from.
