Most of the conversations I have with startups are quick 15-20 minute intro calls – not much time. Typically there is an intro and company description. As time allows these are my favorite three questions to ask in that first call.
What is the why?
What is your big hairy audacious goal?
Tell me about the team that is going to make this happen?
Unfortunately many founders often start down feature wormholes in the first conversation. I understand that you are excited about what you are building, but in the first call I really want to learn more about you and what drives you. The founders that stand apart are the ones that can articulate their idea quickly, concisely, and then have great answers for these three questions.
