It is better to reduce your company’s runway and hire “A” people than to bring on a “B” team that may be a little cheaper.
Adding great people to your team is the most important thing you can do to build and scale a startup. Hiring great people is tough. Founders are resource strapped and often inexperienced at hiring and managing employees. The best CEO’s hire A+ people for leadership roles, employees that aren’t just “yes people.”
One common mistake startup founders make is that they try to pay below market rates in exchange for equity. Great people command a premium and you will need to pay market salary AND equity for the best.
